Entering the Exclusion Zone (Radiated Area) My Thoughts

In two days I will be in what the Japanese call the Exclusion zone. A 60 mile radius of evacuated space around Fukushima Daichi and Daini (The Power plants). I enter the exclusion zone not fully knowing what to expect or the possible long term repercussions that the radiation may have on my health. (I will be there for close to 10 days.)  I have done everything I can to prepare. I am even mailing a percentage of my  items to Tokyo to travel lighter. Necessities only.  Food, Water, One change of clothes, and camera. I also am bringing radiation gear that I  purchased yesterday in XXXX city. I have allowed myself two items of luxury, a book to write and a book to read.  Am I brave? or simply stupid? Does it matter at this point. The trip needs to be done. The world needs to hear the stories first hand from the evacuees and see the current situation.

So I begin in a few minutes the final phase of my journey into the heart of darkness of Japan. Fukushima. I have no regrets or doubt about going. I took yesterday to reflect and do my last minute preparations.  I am ready... 4 months of intense training, 3  months of taking supplements from Planet Minerals to counter radiation, Geiger Counter generously provided by International Medcom to measure radiation (and I have been taking measurements everywhere I go), Light weight insect repellant clothes from Exofficio, Water purifier, Maps and clothing from Distant Lands, Samys Camera, Sans Disk, LowePro and Fleet Street Sports for helping make the walk a little easier on my feet. Lastly to Mrs. Koike andthe supportive Staff at the Kitano Arms in Tokyo. All these people and companies have made this moment possible.  I couldn't ask for more.

I am ready. Thank you for reading my blog. See you all back in Tokyo.
